The major constituents of this drug are saponins- asiaticoside, medacassoside, medacoside, Asiatic acid and triterpenic acid. This climbing shrub is found all over tropical India and has active ingredients like diterpenoid lactones, alkaloids sesquiterpenoid, aliphatic compounds, polysaccharides etc. It possesses cognitive, memory enhancing and anti-stress activities. It is also a rich source of zinc and copper due to which it acts as a good antioxidant. Research with the herb on animals revealed that it enhanced cognition of normal and cognitive deficit animals in Hebb William Mazes and passive avoidance test.
SHANKHAPUSHPI (CONVOLVULUS PLEURICAULIS CHOIS)
The herb contains microphyllic acid, kaempferol-kaempferol-3-glucoside, shankhapushpin, sitosterols and 3, 4 dihydroxycinnamic acid which protects the nerves and promotes intellectual activity. The herb has been found to relieve signs and symptoms of Chittodvega (anxiety disorders) by regulating the production of stress hormones in the body- adrenaline and cortisol.
